The team at Wayside hope all our patients had a wonderful summer and spent a well-earned rest enjoying some quality time with friends and family. Or maybe some of you can’t wait to get back to a normal routine! Either way, as summer starts to fade thoughts inevitably start to move towards the new school term and we know for parents it’s easy to get swept up in the whirlwind of new schedules, homework, and after-school activities. But amidst the hustle and bustle, there’s one essential task that shouldn’t be overlooked: scheduling your child’s dental check-up. At Wayside Dental Practice, in Harpenden, we have a high-quality set-up for children’s dentistry and we firmly believe the back-to-school period is the perfect time to prioritise your child’s oral health. Here’s why:

1. Establishing a Routine

The start of the school year is a time for new beginnings. As your child gets used to waking up early, packing their bags, and completing homework, why not add regular dental visits to the routine? By scheduling a check-up at the beginning of the school year, you’re setting the tone for consistent oral hygiene habits that can last a lifetime. Regular dental visits help children understand the importance of maintaining their teeth and gums, just as they would with other daily routines like brushing and flossing.

2. Preventing Dental Issues Before They Escalate

Over the summer, it’s easy for routines to slip, and this can include dental care. With all the treats, ice creams, and relaxed brushing schedules, your child may have developed some dental issues. A back-to-school check-up allows our dentists to catch any potential problems early. Whether it’s a small cavity, plaque build-up, or early signs of gum disease, addressing these issues promptly can prevent them from becoming more serious (and more painful) down the road. And we’re really happy about being one of the few dental practices to offer laser dentistry for children. Laser dentistry is great for children’s fillings as it is minimally invasive as well as being comfortable. It also does not make the noise a drill makes-just a popping sound.

At Wayside we use the Waterlase laser instead of a drill or scalpel and its gentle action helps eliminate any fear and anxieties associated with dental visits. It’s the preferred treatment for tooth decay with no heat, vibration and shrill sound of the drill. For other treatments, such as tongue tie release and frenectomies, there’s less trauma to the area and faster healing.

And we also have the Wand for pain free anaesthesia, should your child need it.

3. Supporting Academic Success

Healthy teeth play a crucial role in your child’s overall well-being, which directly impacts their performance at school. Dental pain and discomfort can be distracting and make it difficult for children to focus on their studies. In some cases, untreated dental issues can lead to missed school days, which can affect their learning and progress. By ensuring your child’s teeth are in top condition, you’re helping to remove any potential barriers to their academic success. A happy, healthy smile contributes to confidence in the classroom, allowing your child to engage fully in their education.

4. Convenient Scheduling

The back-to-school season is often a quieter time at dental practices, making it easier to find a convenient appointment that fits your family’s schedule. After the summer rush now is the perfect window to book that dental check-up without the stress of long waits. At Wayside Dental Practice, we strive to accommodate busy parents and can help you find a time that doesn’t interfere with school hours or after-school activities. Also, you can now book your appointments online via our website!

5. Establishing Positive Dental Experiences

For some children, visiting the dentist can be a source of anxiety. Scheduling regular check-ups, especially during the less stressful back-to-school period, helps to normalise dental visits and reduce any fears your child might have. Our friendly team at Wayside Dental Practice takes pride in creating a welcoming environment, ensuring your child feels comfortable and cared for. Positive dental experiences early in life are key to fostering a lifetime of good oral health habits. We have iPads loaded with Apple Arcade in our waiting room which the children who visit us definitely enjoy!

The back-to-school season is more than just a time for new pencils and backpacks—it’s an opportunity to prioritise your child’s dental health. At Wayside Dental Practice in Harpenden, we’re here to support your family with comprehensive dental care. Schedule your child’s check-up today, and let’s make this school year their healthiest yet!
